The book you see in #s 1 and 2 is a book called “20th Century American Painting” which my grandfather bought in 1969 (I know the year because he wrote it on the flyleaf of the book!). This page shows the famous Jasper Johns painting “Numbers in Color" (1958–59), which is certainly my favourite Jasper Johns painting, and possibly even my favourite painting ever full stop. It’s in the collection of the Albright-Knox gallery in Buffalo (New York) which is relatively close to Toronto, so I have actually seen this painting in real life. And it’s 10 times more spectacular “live” than it is in a 45 year old book.
The other cool thing about Jasper Johns is that he has been a guest voice on The Simpsons…but I digress:
